Presentation
This presentation will introduce us to some of the plants in our flora that can cause poisoning, hallucinations, dermatitis, or other problems if ingested or handled. [perkiomenwatershed.org]
& Rose, western water-hemlock, and Cicuta virosa L., northern water-hemlock, is presented. The three perennials are native in Canada and all contain cicutoxin, a chemical very poisonous to humans and livestock. [nrcresearchpress.com]

Blooms are present from June through the early part of July. About the only logical use of this plant by Native Americans was by the Klamath of the Great Basin. [ionxchange.com]

Gastrointestinal
- Vomiting
Upon human consumption, nausea, vomiting, and tremors occur within 30–60 minutes, followed by severe cramps, projectile vomiting, and convulsions. [en.wikipedia.org]
The book 'Poisonous Plants and Fungi' says vomiting occurs with both O. crocata and C. virosa the former within an hour of ingestion. [thepoisongarden.co.uk]
As there commonly exists a spontaneous tendency to vomit, occasioned by the poison itself, this should be assisted by mechanical means, by irritating the throat with the finger, or with a feather. [henriettes-herb.com]
STOMACH. ► Nausea and vomiting, [4]. ► Vomiting, [5], [6], [8]. ► Sick at the stomach (after one hour), [9]. ► Vomiting several times, [7]. ► Ejections of frothy mucus, mixed with a dark flocculent sediment and blood, [4]. ► Every few minutes he complained [homeoint.org]
- Nausea
Poisoning became apparent after forty minutes and the man was admitted to hospital with a variety of symptoms including nausea and convulsions which were so severe that a paralysing agent was required. [thepoisongarden.co.uk]
Nausea and vomiting occur if the animal can vomit. Bloating is common. [research.vet.upenn.edu]

The body enters extreme spasms and convulsions followed by excessive salivation, tremors, nausea and delirium. The main toxin is Alkaloid Cicutoxin which attacks the central nervous system approximately 15-20 minutes after the plant is eaten. [voyageurcountry.com]

- Abdominal Pain
Its toxin, called cicutoxin, can cause delirium, nausea, convulsions, abdominal pain, seizures, and vomiting within 60 minutes of ingestion – frequently leading to death. Taxonomists sometimes recognize two species of water hemlock in North America. [fs.fed.us]
Abdominal pain is evident, pupils are dilated, and temperature may be several degrees higher than normal. Humans may become delirious. Nausea and vomiting occur if the animal can vomit. Bloating is common. [research.vet.upenn.edu]
Ingestion may cause abdominal pain, convulsions, delirium, nausea, seizures and vomiting - often resulting in death. This plant typically measures three to six feet tall and has stems that are smooth and hollow. [fws.gov]
Initial symptoms reported may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, tremors, confusion, weakness, dizziness, and drowsiness; although the rapid onset of seizure activity may be the first sign presenting following poisoning. [outdoorselfreliance.com]
Mild toxicity from water hemlock produces nausea, abdominal pain, and epigastric distress within 15-90 minutes. The early gastrointestinal response of vomiting may be somewhat protective as many persons regurgitate the undigested root. [cdc.gov]

Symptoms of poisoning include nausea, diarrhea, respiratory difficulty, rapid and weak pulse, and convulsions. Livestock will usually not eat water hemlock but only a small amount can be fatal. Dead plants remain toxic. [kswildflower.org]
Symptoms of toxicity include: nervous trembling, salivation, pupil dilation, rapid, weak pulse, and eventually leading to coma or death. If you suspect toxicity from poison hemlock, call Minnesota Poison Control System immediately at 1-800-222-1222. [mda.state.mn.us]
Neurologic
- Seizure
Poisoned people who recover usually regain consciousness and seizures cease within 24 to 48 hours of poisoning, although seizures may persist for up to 96 hours. [outdoorselfreliance.com]
They act as (noncompetitive) gamma-aminobutyric acid antagonists in the central nervous system (CNS), resulting in unabated neuronal depolarization that can lead to seizures. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Without immediate, aggressive treatment, fatality is most certain. The voyagers called it "carotte de Moreau" after a man who died from eating it. Many cases of human death are on record attributed to simply tasting this plant in the United States. [voyageurcountry.com]
Prognosis
Prognosis is good, however, if prompt supportive care is provided. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

However, death can be prevented by use of artificial ventilation until the toxin wears off 48-72 hours later, when spontaneous recovery typically occurs. [wildmedicinal.wordpress.com]
